Pause for Dramatic Effect is written, directed, and produced by Kyle M. Bondo (Gagglepod/Oncetold) as part of the 2019 NaPodPoMo (National Podcast Post Month) Challenge (Produce 30 Episodes in 30 Days). At the end of the challenge, Season 1 of PAUSE included 17 chapters, 13 Behind the PAUSES "Making Of" episodes, and 2 trailers, for a total of 32 episodes.
I am currently re-releasing my 13 Part Series Between the Pauses: The Making of PAUSE for Dramatic Effect, on Not Easily Squished. Between the Pauses is a mini-documentary created from my weekly production journal that explores all the lessons I learned while making my first audio drama:
The story of PAUSE for Dramatic Effect started as a pre-selected, one-word writing prompt challenge called "Inktober" in October 2019. Each word in the prompt inspired the title and script for what would become an episode.
The 30 prompt words I used to write a part of the story each day in October, I combine several of them to form 17 chapters of a complete season. Then I took those 17 chapters and crafted 17 audio drama scripts, some written the day before (and sometimes day-of) recording that episode. With no time for re-recording or script edits, whatever I wrote became the dialogue, sound design, and plot for that episode.
The end result was a "pantsers" dream come true, complete with epic drama, cringy moments, and a lot of happy accidents. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything!
Here are the final 17 scripts used to create PAUSE for Dramatic Effect Season One: False Awakenings:
I could not have done Pause for Dramatic Effect without the help of my friends and family, the awesome lessons taught during Podfest's 2019 AudioDramaCon, hallway conversations with KC Wayland, founder and CEO of Wayland Productions, and a special one-on-one interview with Sean Howard, co-founder and CEO of Fable and Folly.
